Camden Town opens ‘pub for hedgehogs’ initiative

London brewery Camden Town has launched a ‘pub for hedgehogs’ initiative, providing a hideaway for hibernating or nesting hedgehogs.

The scheme has been launched in partnership with the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS) will see a portion of sales from the brewery’s new lager donated to the society while customers can also buy a hedgehog ‘pub’ to put in their garden.

Dubbed ‘The Hibernation Arms’ the small boxes have been designed to look like a small pub and are designed to provide shelter for hedgehogs while they hibernate in winter and for females to raise their litters of hoglets when the breed in the summer.

The initiative marks the launch of Camden Town’s latest addition to its Seasonal Lager range ‘Hibernation Hells’.

Available from Sainsbury’s and M&S, a portion of the sale of each can will be donated to the BHPS.

Fay Vass, chief executive of The British Hedgehog Preservation Society, said: “We are very grateful that Camden Town Brewery is showing support for hedgehogs with its fantastic Hells in Hibernation Lager.  Hedgehog populations have declined by half in rural areas and by a third in urban ones in the last 20 years so they need all the help they can get.  The funds and awareness that this collaboration raises will help us, help hedgehogs.”

Jasper Cuppaidge, founder of Camden Town Brewery, added: “As the changes in our environment are having an increasingly negative impact on the wildlife around us, we’re having to be more aware of how we can all do our bit to help. Our partnership with the British Hedgehog Preservation Society has taught us how we can all do our bit – whether it’s educating us on what to do when we find a hedgehog in need, or creating a safe space, like The Hibernation Arms, in your garden at home.”

The hedgehog pubs are available to buy here for £50 each.
