The Global Masters Wine of the Week: Rive di Colbertaldo Prosecco

Every week, we select a wine that picked up either a Gold or Master from our competition series, and tell you why the judges loved it. Enter the Global Masters, and this could be your wine.

It’s mistakenly believed by many that Prosecco is just Prosecco, when in fact there is much variation in the category, depending on the producer’s approach, and the source of the grapes.

The most common distinction is made between the much larger DOC area of Prosecco, and the hillsides of the DOCG regions, of which there are two: Asolo and Conegliano-Valdobbiadene.

But less well known is the fact that Prosecco also has a classification for particular sub-zones with distinct and high-quality sites. Called Rive, these rare Proseccos are worth seeking out as they celebrate great vineyards, and are generally more expressive sparkling wines.

Among these, one that shone in our Prosecco Masters competition was the Rive di Colbertaldo from Maschio dei Cavalieri.

With masses of fresh white peach, orange blossom, and a gentle note of ripe orchard fruits, this is a lovely example of delicious aromatic Prosecco that captures the quality of a brilliant area for growing the Glera grape – the basis of all Prosecco.

The wine: Maschio dei Cavalieri – Rive di Colbertaldo – Prosecco Superiore di Valdobbiadene DOCG

The source: Valdobbiadene DOCG, Italy

The grape(s): 85% Glera, 15% complementary grape varieties allowed by the regulations

The style: A youthful, aromatic, Brut sparkling wine

The price: Around £15

The medal: Gold – The Prosecco Masters, 2019

With high-quality judges and a unique sampling process, the Global Wine Masters provides a chance for your wines to star, whether they hail from the great vineyards of Europe or lesser-known corners of the New World.

It’s a competition dedicated to making winners out of winemakers.
