Wine & Spirits Show 2019: The Podcasts

We held our Wine & Spirits Show 2019 in partnership with The Spirits Business last month, where 1,500 consumers and trade insiders got a chance to sample drinks entering the UK market from all over the world.

We were joined by exhibitors like Rebel Pi, Zonin 1821 and, of course, Piper Heidsieck, and hosted a series of masterclasses to educate and inspire guests to go on to learn more about their favourite beverages.

If you didn’t get a chance to attend the show this spring, fear not, because we’ve teamed up with podcast series Interpreting Wine on two brand new episodes, based on our very own workshops from the event.

Lawrence Francis produces the Interpreting Wine podcast from London, covering hospitality and drinks. In over 250 episodes, he has covered London restaurants including Leroy and Sager+Wilde, UK wine producer Ben Walgate and international wine regions including New York state. This year, his series has so far included Wines of New Zealand, several Masters of Wine, and two masterclasses from the Wine & Spirits Show.

He came to our show on Saturday to record the Drinks Trends of the Century briefing with db‘s editor in chief Patrick Schmitt MW, and a rundown of high-tech closure company Coravin’s latest wine storage and pourage gadgets.

“I thought the trends of the century masterclass was a fantastic primer on the current state of play” Francis said of the trends class, adding that there was a “really engaging balance of stories, statistics, and tasting.

“If you had somehow been absent from the wine scene since the turn of the century this would have brought you bang up to date.”

Francis also had a chance to record Coravin’s workshop, which showed attendees how to use its high-spec closures equipment.

“I find so often that innovation within the industry is realised by people working in other, seemingly unrelated industries and it was the case with the Coravin” he said.

“This masterclass brought to light, how wine drinkers using the Coravin owe a debt to the medical industry and how owning a Coravin can unlock the potential of your wine cellar. I found it really interesting that in the UK they sell as many to private owners as they do to bars and restaurants.

The podcast is available on iTunes, Spotify, Soundcloud and all usual podcast sources.
