Wine of the Week: Viña Pomal Alto de la Caseta 2015

We at team db want to celebrate the very best bottles from our Global Wine Masters. Every Wednesday, we’ll select a wine that picked up either a Gold or Master from our competition series, and tell you why the judges loved it.

Easter weekend is around the corner, and that means one thing: spring lamb. We wanted to find something special for you to serve alongside your roast, and selected this silky Rioja from Bodegas Bilbanias.

We gave the 2015 Viña Pomal Alto de la Caseta a Master, the highest accolade a wine can achieve, in last year’s Rioja Masters. Noted for its superb length, this Rioja is the perfect accompaniment to a hearty lamb roast.

Made from Tempranillo from a vineyard located at the top of a meander of the river Ebro, and planted with vines that are over 35 years old, Viña Pomal is one of the great brands of Bodegas Bilbaínas

The 2015 comes in at just over £60 on Decantalo, but this is a special bottle made for sharing. Simon Field MW called this particular serve “outstanding” thanks to its savoury note, dried fruit, great length, while Matthieu Longuere MS found the 2015 to be full bodied and concentrated with “welcome acidity.”
