Top 10 Scotch whiskies for Christmas

Lagavulin 16 Year Old

For a taste of the sea…

Hailing from the southern tip of Islay, Lagavulin’s 16 Year Old has become this single malt whisky distillery’s flagship bottling. It also produces a Distiller’s Edition, finished in Pedro Ximénez Sherry casks, and regularly release a 12-year-old cask strength version alongside various older and rarer expressions.

Smelling of a roaring bonfire, with notes of peat smoke, iodine and seaweed, this is a rich and full bodied whisky with dry peat smoke on the palate and a “strong sweetness” with notes of salt, seaweed and wood on the finish. Perfect with blue cheese.

Owned by Diageo, the name Lagavulin is an anglicisation of Lag a’ Mhuilinn, the Scottish Gaelic for “hollow of the mill”.

RRP: £54.95 (Currently £48.95 on Master of Malt)
