Sotheby’s NYC sale storms to US$5m

The third and final instalment of a trio of auctions, the Don Stott fine wine sale in New York this week made over US$5 million and set new records for Rouuseau, Roumier and Ravenau at auction.

Held in New York on Saturday (20 May) the sale achieved a staggering US$5.1m, against a pre-sale high estimate of ‘just’ $2.8m, with 87% of the lots selling for over the high estimates. The three parts of the sale have now made $19m in total.

Several wines set new records at the sale for the highest prices per bottle ever achieved at auction.

These included $4,083 a bottle for 1990 Chambertin from Armand Rousseau; $3,267 a bottle for Rousseau’s 1989 Clos de Beze; $14,292 a bottle for Domaine Georges Roumier’s 1971 Bonnes Mares and $10,208 a bottle for the 1993 Musigny.

At $85,750 for six bottles the most expensive lot sold at the auction was 1971 Musigny from Georges Roumier, while a case of 12 bottles of 2005 Chambolle Musigny Les Amoureuses from the domaine realised $73,500.

Other top lots (all of the top 10 lots from the sale were Burgundies), included: 993 Musigny from Roumier, 1990 Chambertin from Rousseau, 2012 Romanée-Conti from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and 1971 Bonnes Mares and 2005 Musigny from Roumier.

Jamie Ritchie, worldwide head of Sotheby’s Wine, remarked: “Basquiat set multiple records in the art world last week and Rousseau, Roumier and Raveneau did the same in the wine world – reaching prices that shocked the wine collecting community. The Don Stott Cellar Part III brought an avalanche of interest from all over the world, using every possible method of bidding.

“The third part of the Don Stott Cellar totaled $5.2 million, a staggering 260% of the low estimate and 180% of the high estimate. This brings Sotheby’s total sales from the collection to $19 million, making it the third largest we have ever sold worldwide, further illustrating Sotheby’s leading position in offering Single Owner wine sales.”

Don Stott commented: “Sotheby’s thoughtful presentation and focused marketing achieved results far beyond expectations. As always working with Jamie, Connor and the whole Sotheby’s Wine team proved to be a delightful and fulfilling experience.”
