New on Wine List Confidential: Sweetings

Sweetings – Wine List Confidential Score: 83.2

A long-standing City institution billed as ‘probably the oldest fish and oyster restaurant in London’.

Expect at least two grades of Mersea oysters alongside fried whitebait, an arguably impossible-to-match-with-wine smoked eels, as well as a crisp, classic prawn cocktail.

The most expensive dish, wild turbot and mustard, commands the best wine from the France-centric list, although be aware that this does not include vintages nor grower.

Of 18 wines by the glass, just four are red, in reference to the piscine nature of the venue.

A list of vintage Ports is available post-dinner, though. Reassuringly, perhaps, just two wines (Cristal and Dom Pérignon) are priced over £100.
