1801 Cognac sold for £222,000

A bottle of Cognac has been sold at Hedonism Wines in London for £222,000 – making it one of the most expensive bottles of the spirit ever bought.

The bottle of Massougnes 1801 Cognac was sold to an Asian client earlier this week.

The imperial three-quarter gallon bottle was acquired by Hermitage Cognacs some 20 years ago from Marie-Antoinette des Allées, Comtesse de la Bourdeliere whose family owns the former Cognac producing estate.

Speaking to the drinks business, Hermitage Cognac’s managing director, David Baker, said he had tried to source more old Cognacs from the estate but, “I think the source has dried up completely.”

At its peak the Massougnes estate was extremely large, with around 360 hectares of vineyard. Bills of sale have been found which date the property to the 1730s but it ceased to produce Cognac after the ravages of phylloxera in the mid-19th century.

Baker said he still has one three-quarter gallon bottle of the 1805.
