Golden Girls-themed restaurant to open

A restaurant themed around the classic 80s sitcom Golden Girls is to open in New York, complete with memorabilia, live music and cheesecake.

Golden Girls ran from 1985 to 1992.

Rue La Rue will open in Manhattan’s Washington Heights in early September with dishes themed on the 80s series about four mature female roommates living in a house in Miami.

According to DNA Info, the restaurant is being opened by Michael J LaRue, who named the establishment after his best friend Rue McClanahan who played Blanche Devereaux.

When McClanahan died in 2010 she left LaRue all of her memorabilia from her acting career, some of which will be on display at the restaurant, including her piano, which will be used for live-music shows.

LaRue has partnered with McClanahan’s son Mark Bisch to open the restaurant, with Betty White, who played Rose Nylundset and is the only living member of the cast, set to make an appearance at its grand opening.

Dishes set to appear on the menu include Thank You for Being a Friend Fries, Sophia’s Sicilian Meatballs and, of course, cheesecake.

“I believe I can turn this place into a mini-tourist [hub] in Washington Heights,” LaRue, who lives in the neighborhood, told DNA Info.

The café will be open Monday through Friday 6am to 10pm and on weekends from 6am to 11pm.

LaRue has said he plans to add an outdoor terrace to the café next year.
