2005 Bordeaux dominates best performers on Liv-ex 100

The Liv-ex Fine Wine 100 is showing signs of life after years of decline and several 2005 Bordeaux estates are among the best performers.

Ch. La MissionLiv-ex suggested recently that the fine wine market is “turning a corner” as the Fine wine 100 has shown its first year-on-year increase since November 2013 and is up 3.4% on where it was in June 2014.

No doubt boosted by Robert Parker’s rescoring late last month, the 2005 vintage from Bordeaux dominates the best performers chart (see below) with the top six wines all coming from the vintage and seven wines overall in the top 10 are 2005s.

La Mission Haut-Brion, a freshly minted 100-pointer, has seen the biggest change rising 54.6% between June 2014 and June of this year.

Over the same period fellow 100-pointers Pavie, Cheval Blanc and Haut-Brion have risen 40%, 30% and 28.7% respectively.

Interestingly, despite not garnering 100-points (to widespread chagrin) Mouton Rothschild and Palmer rose 34.4% and 31.3%.

Other 100-pointers were also present, 2010 Montrose which went up 24% and the 2010 La Las which have managed to rise 15%.

Ponsot’s 2011 Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes is up 16.2% and 2005 Cos d’Estournel is up 21.6%.

Where there are winners there are also losers and Ausone’s “almost perfect” 2000 is the worst performer overall having fallen 14.4% in the past year despite its 98-points, while Vega Sicilia’s 2004 “Unico” is down 11.4%.

Other weak performers include: 2009 La Tâche, 2001 Yquem, 2004 Cristal, 2000 Lafite, 2009 Grange and Comte de Vogüé’s 2009 Musigny Vieilles Vignes.
