Pub sets up pop-up drunk tank for Christmas

A pub in Worcestershire has come up with a novel way to curb drink-driving this Christmas, and is creating pop-up drunk tanks in its beer garden this December.

Liz Jennings, landlady of the Drum and Monkey in Newbridge Green, was chatting with pub regular Daniel Walton, who runs www.olproshop.com , a locally-based tent manufacturer. The idea grew for their conversation and Walton offered a range of camping gear including several large tents, three-season sleeping bags, nightlights and a toilet tent.

Now if anyone is over the limit at the time of leaving the pub they will be offered a free berth in one of the pub’s temporary drunk tanks.

Talking about the plan, Jennings said: “There was so much interest in paid-for drunk tanks earlier this year and I thought it was a good idea. But I wanted to offer my customers a free facility as it’s the season of goodwill.

“I’ll even be offering my overnight guests a mug of hot tea and a bacon butty the next morning before sending them on their way.”

The pub will be clearing away its garden furniture and putting six tents and a toilet tent in their place, which will remain in place from 3 December to 1 January.
