Brewer Q & A: Peter Curran

This month, the drinks business legged it up to Lancashire to have a chat with Peter Curran, head brewer for Moorhouse’s Brewery, closet coach driver and Kanye West fan.

Age: 53

Birthplace: Burnley

Starsign: Virgo

How did you become a brewer? I had been working at Moorhouse’s for a few years, when I was asked if I could help out at the brewhouse. I have been here ever since.

When did you have your beer epiphany? It was in 1975, I had just been posted to RAF Henlow in Bedfordshire and I had my first pint of Greene King.

Who is your brewing inspiration? Moorhouse’s ex-head brewer Peter Goldsborough.

What was the first beer you brewed? Moorhouse’s Pride of Pendle. If I may say, it was good.

If you weren’t a brewer what would you be doing? I would probably be driving either coaches or trucks.

Favourite beer from another brewery? Timothy Taylor’s Landlord.

Sum up Moorhouse’s beer in two words? It’s magic.

Top hop? Fuggle.

Your favourite Moorhouse’s beer? Premier Bitter.

Secret to good brewing? An eye for detail, consistency and dedication.

What simple thing would you improve about British Brewing? Lower beer duty and stop shops selling beer as a loss leader.

Favourite beer and food match? A nice cheese (crumbly Lancashire) and a nice strong ale.

Advice for home brewers? Source the best materials you can.

How much money have you got on you? £27.38 (don’t tell the wife).

Who would win in a fight between a bull and a cobra? The cobra because of its stealth and speed.

Idea of happiness? A nice meal out with my wife, Kai, a couple of pints of a decent cask ale and to see Burnley back in the Premiership.

Revels or Minstrels? Minstrels

Whisky or Gin? Whisky.

Last CD you bought? My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy by Kanye West.

What was the last decent film you watched? Unstoppable

If you could have a beer with anyone from history who would it be and which beer would you choose? Winston Churchill – one of Britain’s greatest statesmen – and a pint of Moorhouse’s Premier Bitter.
