Gallo enters gin business
In a somewhat surprising move, E & J Gallo Winery has entered the gin business, launching a brand called New Amsterdam Straight Gin. The spirit is being produced at Gallo’s Modesto facility, source of E&J Brandy, previously the only spirit in the company’s portfolio.
The gin has a hint of citrus and RRP of US$13-14. It is being rolled out across North America over the course of the year, following test marketing earlier in 2008.
It is hoped the new brand will tap into a growing demand for premium gin in the US, led by labels such as Tanqueray and Bombay Sapphire.
Production figures or projected sales for New Amsterdam Straight Gin have not been revealed.
