Tasting notes:
Ürziger Würzgarten comprises very steep slopes of red sandstone soil and forms an amphitheatre extending down to the river. The iron-red soil gives exotic flavours as shown in this wine. Quite deep yellow-gold in colour, the wine exhibits dried apricots, pink grapefruit, honey and orange marmalade redolent of botrytis with an overlay of buttercream. Quite sweet on entry, medium-bodied, the palate shows excellent concentration, depth of flavour and development balanced by well-integrated lively acidity. Beautifully defined with lovely texture and a lengthy finish, this wine is a nearly perfect example of its style. Probably Auslese, really, but with a savoury finish after long ageing. This wine would work well with baked venison mince and dried apricot-prune-date loaf wrapped in puff pastry to create a \'memorable magical moment\'. [Patricia Stefanowicz MW]
