Tasting notes:
St Leger is a small winery in the Constantia area within the confines of a small homestead known as Le Marais (swamp land). The grapes for this exquisite Chardonnay, however, are grown on the clay-rich topsoil and granite sub-soils in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley with Elgin’s cool climate. Barrel fermented and then aged in French oak barrels and terracotta amphorae, the pale lemon-green-coloured wine shows melon, pear and green apple with creamy oak and a touch of lees. Mid-weight, the palate is beautifully integrated with bracing acidity adding backbone and length. A good pairing is sole Véronique. (Patricia Stefanowicz MW)
