Tasting notes:
The name ‘Crasto’ derives from the Roman term ‘castrum’, meaning ‘fort’. After more than a century of producing exceptional Ports and unfortified red and white wines, it’s fair to say that the Almeida-Roquette family retains the tradition of the even older caretakers of this property, documented as long ago as 1615. Very deep purple in colour, the wine displays the classic characteristics of the 2018 vintage: blackberry and huckleberry fruits and a touch of cherry jam, with nutmeg and cinnamon spice notes of oak and a hint of vanilla pod. It’s sweet, but not cloying due to the refreshing acidity and silky-textured tannins balancing the warming alcohol. There is a fiery edge on the finish that adds interest too. A sophisticated wine that will develop for at least another 10-12 years. (Patricia Stefanowicz MW)
