Tasting notes:
This sweet fortified Romanian wine (‘Ovid’s Tears’) comes from vineyards in Murfatlar and is aged for five years in oak. Deepish tawny-coloured with a green edge, the nose has ripe plum and dried cherry fruit with toasty oak, brown nuts, caramel and a touch of sous bois. Very sweet, the palate is quite full-bodied with dark fruits and chocolate framed by racy acidity and a touch of tannic grip. Quite old-fashioned, but rather delicious, the wine is lovely with home-made madeleines. (Patricia Stefanowicz MW)
