Yet more proof of the rising quality of English sparkling wine, this Grand Reserve expression from Chapel Down has a mix of baked apple and buttered brown bread, even a touch of caramel, then candied lemon and a firm, dry, citric finish, with a slightly salty note too. Rounded but also super-refreshing, there’s some softness from ageing, but plenty of bright, zesty characters too. (Patrick Schmitt MW)
