Tasting notes:
In 1942 Jan Rossouw persuaded his friendly group of farmers to start producing their own wines instead of selling their grapes at below-subsistence prices. Thus, Perdeberg Winery and a wonderful wine culture was born. This wine, a modern \'classic\' founded on the principles of fortified South African wines, was fermented with skins for a few days. Deep gold in colour, the wine has ripe peach, lemon zest and orange marmalade with just a gentle \'kiss\' of creamy oak. Very sweet (235g/l r.s.), but the bracing acidity balances. The palate is attractive and surprisingly light, showing good definition and length. Candied orange notes, baking spices and a hint of caramel add complexity. Perfect with crème brulée but works well with a slice of pistachio halva. (Patricia Stefanowicz MW)
