Tasting notes:
Bin 28, first made in 1959, was originally named Kalimna after the Barossa Penfolds vineyard, purchased in 1945. Nowadays the wine, like many of Penfolds’ wines, is made from grapes sourced from throughout Australia’s regions, but the Barossa always plays a major role. Deep ruby-purple in hue, this example exhibits blackberry and blueberry fruit with vanilla and violet overtones. Elegant, despite high alcohol, the palate has fresh acidity and svelte tannins. Beautifully defined, layered, textured and lingering across the palate, this is a wine for classic rognons de veau à la crème accompanied by chestnut mushrooms. (Patricia Stefanowicz MW)
