Banfi is a leader in Brunello di Montalcino, undertaking continual research into Sangiovese and everything that influences it and its flavours. The winery has conducted numerous studies on this variety in the vineyard and winery, with the aim of combining quality and innovation. One of the cornerstones is zoning, which began in 1980 and sets out to optimise the different areas and parcels of the estate. A clonal selection project begun two years later has identified specific successful Sangiovese clones and matched them to the zones. This delicious wine shows a deep ruby colour with a hint of garnet and ripe strawberry, red cherry and red plum fruits, accented by dark chocolate, pipe tobacco and crushed red rose notes. The mid-weight palate has bright fruit, supported by fresh acidity and satin textured tannins. Hints of allspice and limestone minerality add complexity. A superb wine to match risotto al radicchio.
