Tasting notes:
Located in Straden in Vulkanland, Styria, Weingut Krispel’s vineyards are largely basalt-volcanic soils at the foothills of the extinct StradenKogel volcano, once partially covered by a primeval sea. This wine, a superb Grauburgunder, is pale gold with a tint of copper. Aromatics show yellow fruits, peaches and dried apricots – nutty and toasty from wood ageing. The palate is barely dry, with fair acidity holding the flavours. An interesting forest honey note adds complexity. A really interesting wine that would work well with traditional Austrian country cuisine, such as pumpkin risotto accented by rosemary. (Patricia Stefanowicz MW)
