Another brilliant Merlot from Philip Shaw, the ‘Hoo’ of Hoosegg, his project in New South Wales beyond the Great Dividing Range. Deep ruby in colour, the wine shows Victoria plum fruit with tobacco, cedar wood and roast nut nuances. Dry, mid-weight and richly fruited, the palate has good freshness and linen-textured tannins. Complex even now, with a lengthy finish redolent of allspice and nutmeg, this wine will pair well with duck à l’orange. (Patricia Stefanowicz MW)
