With the first vintage of Douro wines in1992, Alves de Sousa has now celebrated30-plus years of producing ‘light’ wines,accompanied by their more recentlydeveloped Ports. This wine is stellar.Deep ruby in hue, the wine exhibitsintense blackberry, ripe red berries andmorello cherries, accented by vanilla andmilk chocolate notes. The palate is midweightand the flavours are framed bylively acidity and linen tannins.Seamlessly integrated, layered andtextured, the lengthy finish is lifted withorange zest and cinnamon notes. Apolished wine to pair with sautéedkidneys in a Port wine and grainymustard sauce, served with creamypuréed potatoes and Brussels sprouts.(Patricia Stefanowicz MW)
