Proof that Greek Syrah can be outstanding is this top expression of the grape from Avantis Estate. Powerful and fleshy, but surprisingly fresh and dry, it’s a generous and balanced wine that’s also a serious and age-worthy Syrah. Flavour-wise there’s plenty of black fruit, from blackberry to black cherry, and black olive too, a touch of smoked meat, with cream and toast, before the finish reveals some lovely, mouthwatering notes of fresh plums and sour cherry, and even a character of crushed rocks. As for the tannins, these are firm, but not grainy, giving a strong frame to this intense wine. (Patrick Schmitt MW)
