The Fattoria di Calappiano, another historical property from the Medici family, is based in Chianti Montalbano, one of the seven Chianti sub-zones, south of Pistoia and west of Florence. Here the limestone-clay soils hold heat and allow Sangiovese grapes to ripen fully. This wine is a superb example. Deep ruby-coloured, the aromatics show cranberry, dried cherry and toasty oak. Medium-bodied, the wine has good freshness, quite dense, velvet-textured tannins, with real interest on the mid-palate and finish. Drinking nicely now, the wine will pair well with slow-cooked rabbit and garlicky fagioli. (Patricia Stefanowicz MW)
