Tasting notes:
This top expression of Mercurey from Maison Albert Sounit is a seriouslyimpressive Pinot Noir, based on east-facing vines more than 70 years old from aplot just below the Clos des Montaigus – which also picked up a ‘Master’ in thisyear’s competition. Called Noblesse, this wonderful, richly-flavoured andrefreshing red has so much instant appeal, with pure, pretty, red and dark berryfruit, including juicy cherry and blackberry, allied to complementary barrelsourcedflavours, such as roasted coffee bean and charred bread. Texturally, thewine is smooth, with some sweet fleshiness, but also, dry, super-fine tannins anda medium-weight youthful, energic feel. The finish sees pure fruit notes persist, along with an appealing cedarwood note. A wonderful example of fine Burgundy fromthe Côte Chalonnaise. (Patrick Schmitt MW)
