Tasting notes:
Founded in 1843 around Aÿ, Besserat de Bellefon – ‘BB’ – became fashionable in Paris during the Années Folles before following the freedom of inspiration in St. Tropez in the 1960s. This joie de vivre continues with BB nowadays. This Champagne, made from grapes sourced from the calcareous clay soils of the Vallée de la Marne, takes its name, ‘Triple B’, from the fact that the wine is ‘biological’, ie organic. Pale gold in colour, the wine displays crunchy yellow fruits with touches of cranberry and pomegranate, and is given depth and interest by creamy autolysis and a hint of honey. Extra-brut in style (less than 3g/l residual sugar), the mid-weight palate is framed by crisp acidity and crackling mousse. A textural wine with very good length, it will match carpaccio of scallops or cold meats, and is delicious on its own.(Patricia Stefanowicz MW)
