The ‘classic’ red-and-white-striped lighthouse – foghorn included – at GreenPoint is the inspiration for this wine’s label. Known colloquially as ‘MoaningMinnie’, the lighthouse has long been guiding ships along the misty Capecoast. This wine, too, is a guiding light to great quality at an affordable pricepoint. Sourced from selected low-yield vineyards at about 250m above sealevel, the wine shows a mid-deep ruby colour and dark cherry fruit accentedby chocolate and cigar box notes from oak ageing. Sweet-fruited though dry,the mid-weight palate displays crisp acidity and linen tannins framing theflavours. Kitchen spices and just a hint of mint add to the lingering finish. Adelicious wine, and a perfect match for continental-style steak tartare.(Patricia Stefanowicz MW)
