Hong Kong’s latest cocktail venue is a sign of the changing times

Yume, the latest addition to Hong Kong’s nightlife scene, is catering to earlier bedtimes by starting cocktail hour from 6pm.

Yume recently opened in Central’s On Lok House on Hollywood Road, taking over the basement that once housed Drop, and more recently, Quality Goods Club.

Pitched as a cocktail lounge and Japanese-inspired nightlife venue, Yume has debuted its first cocktail menu, Dream is Destiny. The menu draws on Japanese ingredients and seasonality, introducing signature serves and an origami ‘fortune teller’.

It also offers a food menu designed for sharing, with dishes like tuna tartare with Oscietra caviar, Iberico pork katsu sandos, Wagyu beef sliders and Japanese beef curry empanadas.

Yume will also host a music programme and has upcoming plans for cultural collaborations. It will also be available as an events space.

A press release announcing the new venue said the concept behind Yume was responding to Hong Kong’s changing nightlife. It said: “The city that once started its nights at 11pm now prefers to ease into them, with a good drink, a great playlist and a seat you can actually talk from. Yume captures that shift. From 6pm, the lights are low, the cocktails take centre stage and conversations stretch effortlessly into the night.”

Hong Kong’s late night culture is withering. In August it was announced that nightclub Big Boss Generation (BBG) had suspended operations just two months after it opened on the site of Hong Kong’s legendary Club BBoss with hopes of attracting tourists and young revellers.

And just today it was reported that indie club Slap will close its Mong Kok location in late October.

In light of the changing landscape, Yume is positioning itself as a cocktail lounge which starts the night early.

The venue partnered with Elliot Faber’s Solisca Tequila brand for an event to celebrate 50 Best Bars Week which took place in Hong Kong earlier this month.
