DOC delle Venezie makes up 77% of Triveneto Pinot Grigio bottled in 2021
Triveneto Pinot Grigio recorded 6% growth in 2021 over the previous calendar year, for a total bottled Pinot Grigio Denomination of almost 2.4 million hectolitres (hl), despite the challenges to the sector brought about by the pandemic.
Driving the positive trend of the Veneto, Friuli Venezia Giulia and Trentino sector is the DOC delle Venezie, which, with a total of 1,840,889 hl bottled, amounts to 77.4% of the total Pinot Grigio bottled by the distribution area.
The DO is the most extensive denomination on a national level, with almost 27 thousand hectares of vineyards of which 14 thousand are DOC delle Venezie.
Bottle production was up 5.11% on the previous year, amounting to about 12 million 0.75L bottles more than in 2020.
“We guarantee an important Triveneto DO system balance with the production of Pinot Grigio” says the President of the Consorzio di Tutela Albino Armani.
“Our DOC is a valid support in terms of value, international positioning and quality for all companies and producers, thanks to the guarantee of traceability and certification,” he added.
“In a certain sense, we cover the role of ‘top Denomination’ of the entire production chain of Pinot Grigio from the Northeast and, thanks to an always open dialogue between all protagonists – and supported by the recent recognition of protection and representation erga omnes – we are committed to working together for a broad production planning policy, in the interest of producers who must derive maximum recognition on the market from the DOs they choose to rely on”.
The DOC delivered 198,795 hl of wine to cross-border bottlers in Germany, the UK and US in 2020, up 3.11% compared to 2020.
The role of large foreign buyers should also be acknowledged for their role in increasing distribution of premium wines.
MW Nicholas Paris, Wine & Spirits Education Director for colossus E. & J. Gallo Winery explained: “In the USA, trends are certainly rewarding the categories of Pinot Grigio (from all over the world) Premium, Super and Ultra Premium and Luxury with growth rates ranging from +2 to +7 %, to the detriment of the popular-priced non-premium offer, which saw a significant decline. In particular, our premium entry-level Italian Pinot Grigio (such as our Ecco Domani DOC delle Venezie), premium and luxury ones did well, even in the last two cases exceeding the general market average, with double-digit percentages.”
Important signals also arrive from the United Kingdom, the second reference market for the DOC. Giorgio Pizzolo, President of Enoitalia and Director on the Board of the Consorzio di Tutela commented: “Pinot Grigio delle Venezie is confirmed as the first still white wine sold by our company in the UK in 2021 with a positive growth trend compared to the previous year, thanks also to the investments that the company has been able to make in historical brands, including VOGA ITALIA, which have been able to attract new consumers.
“The resumption of on-trade, especially in the second half of the year, has certainly favoured the turnaround towards 2020, confirming the great interest by the English consumer for this denomination”.
