Firefighters contain blaze at New Zealand vineyard
Five fire crews along with a helicopter have extinguished a blaze at Black Ridge Vineyard in Central Otago after it burned an area of 600sqm earlier today.
As reported by Stuff.nz, a fire broke out just after 3pm local time at the vineyard and winery near Alexandra.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) spokesperson, Brent Dunn, said that an area of 600sqm was burning at the fire’s peak.
He told the publication that the firefighters hoped to contain the blaze to a gully, but that the hot and windy conditions made it difficult.
He confirmed that the fire was extinguished at around 5pm local time with a helicopter helping to dampen hot spots.
It is not yet known if any vines have been damaged in the blaze.
Black Ridge planted its first vines in 1981 with its first commercial vintage in 1988. With a boutique winery established in 1992, the producer currently makes two Gewürztraminers, a Riesling, a Pinot Noir, a Pinot Noir rosé and a Breidecker, a crossing of Riesling and Seibel.
