Scotch label Tomintoul releases 45-year-old whisky costing £2,000
Speyside whisky distillery Tomintoul has released a special edition, 45-year-old single malt Scotch retailing at nearly £2,000 per bottle.
The Tomintoul Vintage 1973 Double Wood Matured has been aged in a combination of white American and old Oloroso sherry casks for more than 30 years.
There are just 218 bottles of Scotch — which has a “clean Sherry influence” with aromas of nuts, chocolate, and coffee bean — available to select European and Asian markets, produced at 44.5% vol, and retailing at £1,950.
‘Vintage 1973 is very much a dram to be treasured,” master distiller Robert Fleming said. “It was crafted with great care.
“It’s been maturing for 45 years, but now is the time for those who appreciate fine whisky to savour this unique and wonderfully flavoursome single malt.
“I’m certain that those who really take their whisky seriously will enjoy the chance to experience a little bit of Tomintoul history.”
The launch comes as Scotch producers enjoyed a healthy boost in overseas sales in the first half of 2018.
Figures published by the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) show that volume exports increased 5.6% to 558m bottles. The value of exports has risen to £1.97bn, a 10.8% increase against the same period last year.
