A Tokaj-infused cocktail at Trump Hotel is DC’s priciest
Trump Hotels has unveiled a Tokaji-based cocktail that will set you back US$169, making it the most expensive cocktail in Washington DC.
The Benjamin Bar & Lounge at the hotel has concocted a wine-based cocktail called the ‘Royal Tokaji Cobbler’ using a late harvest aszú wine from Royal Tokaji mixed with citrus fruits and berries.
The drink is said to be a twist on the 19th-century American recipe for a Sherry cobbler, reported The Washington.
But what makes the cocktail so expensive is that it is also served with a side-shot: an ounce pour of 2007 Essencia by Royal Tokaji served in a crystal spoon as is the traditional Hungarian way of sampling the rare elixir.
As the shot of the Essencia costs US$140 on its own, the Royal Tokaji Cobbler itself costs just US$29 in line with the price of the other cocktails on the menu. It is not yet clear if the Essencia is an optional extra.
A 375ml bottle of the Essencia meanwhile would set one back US$2,250, meaning an ounce with the cocktail can almost be counted as a bargain – dare one say…a ‘deal’?
In addition to the pricey cocktail, the bar also offers a tasting flight of Tokaji aszú wines called “Wine by the Crystal Spoon”.

The bar suggests trying at least three one-ounce pours from a selection of: 2007 Essencia, 2009 Mézes Maly 6 puttonyos, 2008 Bestek 6 puttonyos and 2009 5 puttonyos.
Each of the wines can also be ordered by the glass and by the bottle.
The DC Trump hotel previously raised eyebrows when it launched a US$100 martini called ‘The Benjamin’ served with caviar and raw oysters.
