HDH sale brings in US$9m
In the same week that Sotheby’s celebrated a US$5.2 million sale in New York, over in Chicago Hart Davis Hart raked in $9.9m in a three-day long sale.
Held from 17 to 19 May, the sale featured almost 3,000 lots and was 100% sold with the top lot being a case of 1994 Musigny from Domaine Leroy which realised $101,575, more than double its top estimate of $45,000.
The heart of the sale was a consignment from the cellar of Dr Lee Smith, which featured blue chip, Burgundy, claret and Rhône labels and which realised $2.6m in total.
Highlights from that offering included a dozen bottles of 1990 Domaine Dujac Clos Saint-Denis for $71,700, another 10 bottles of 1990 Bonnes Mares from Dujac for $41,825 and five bottles of 1990 Chambertin from Domaine Leroy which garnered $38,240.
Elsewhere Burgundy was a runaway success as usual with the wines of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Leroy, there was strong bidding for the first growths and Petrus as well as California favourites Screaming Eagle and Dominus.
