Aussie wine recalled after glass discovered in bottle

Australian wine company, Warburn Estate, the producer behind the ‘Rumours’ and ‘Gossip’ brands, has recalled 13 products from its range after pieces of glass were found inside bottles.

Food Standards Australia and New Zealand issued a statement on its website saying that a packaging fault had resulted in the possible presence of glass inside of the company’s wine bottles, which may cause injury if consumed.

The wines in question are sold at Australian retailers BWS, Dan Murphy’s, independent liquor stores and hotels across the country.

All of the recalled wines are from its 2017 vintage and include wines from its Rumours, Gossip and Wine Gang ranges.

Under its Rumours label, its Semillon Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Moscato are affected.

Gossip has seen its Chardonnay, Semillon Sauvignon Blanc, Moscato, Pink Moscato, Dolcetto and Syrah and Sauvignon Blanc affected, while the 2017 ‘Wine Gang’ Sauvignon Blanc and 2017 Warburn Estate Sangiovese Rose has also been recalled.

The Food Standards Australia and New Zealand stated: “Consumers should not drink this product and should return the products to the place of purchase for a full refund.”

Update (08/12 15:30): Awin Barratt Siegel Wine Agencies (ABS), who represent Warburn in the UK, including the Rumours and Gossips ranges, issued a further statement to the drinks business, confirming that none of the potentially affected bottles have made their way into the UK market.

Partner at ABS, Elliot Awin, added: “Warburn have kept us abreast of the product recall situation as it developed and in fact it is our understanding that the issue lies with the glass manufacturer in Australia and it is not a Warburn specific problem.

“We have checked and confirmed lot numbers with Warburn and are happy to advise that none of these products have been shipped to the UK market”.
