Stone Brewing makes sewage water beer

San Diego’s Stone Brewing has created Full Circle, a pale ale made from 100% recycled sewage water.

Stone Brewery, the USA’s ninth-largest brewery based on its 2016 sales, has unveiled a new beer using recycled, treated sewage water from San Diego’s Pure Water demonstration plant.

The brewery produced five barrels of Full Circle, according to the Times of San Diego, however, the beer is currently not for sale.

Brewer Steve Gonzalez had his reservations before starting the project but the results were a pleasant surprise.

“Among the pale ales that I’ve made, it’s probably in the top three,” he said.

Full Circle pale ale is brewed with Riwaka and Wai-iti hops, which Gonzalez claims, proffer notes of caramel and tropical fruit.

The verdict has been overwhelmingly positive with the beer also contributing to San Diego’s Pure Water project, which has set itself the goal of ensuring that recycled water constitutes one third of the city’s drinking water by 2021.

Stone Brewing hopes to make Full Circle pale ale available soon.
