Around half of the 41 wines that go on shelf on 24 November, come from France, along with seven Italian and seven Spanish wines, as well as wines from Hungary and Chile.

The French wines hail from across France, including a Chablis Premier Cru, Domaine de Oliveira Lecestre (RRP: 14.99), two Bordeaux, including one from from Pomerol’s Clos Sainte Anne (RRP: £14.99), and wines from Crozes-Hermitage and Vacqueyras.

The Italian wines include a Baroloa Riserva (RRP £12.99) and a Bolgheri and Chianti Classico Riserva from Medici Ricardi, it confirmed.

The discounter is also building on its sweet wine selection for Christmas, with eight new dessert wines, including three Tokaji, including a Tokaji 5 Puttonyos Aszú (RRP: £18.99) and Tokaji Szamorodni (RRP: £6.99) from producer Grof Degenfeld, a German Trockenbeerenauslese (RRP: £7.99 for 375cl) and two Canadian wines from Pilliteri Estate, who supplied its first foray into ice-wine last year, with the Vidal Ice Wine (RRP: £14.99 for 375cl) and a Cabernet Sauvignon Rosé Ice Wine (RRP: £15.99).

Speaking to db earlier int the year, buyer Anna Krettmann said the discounter had seen great success from the Hungarian wine range that it launched earlier in the year and was set to explore Eastern Europe further.

When the retailer launched the ice-wine last Christmas, Pillateri’s export Manager Jared Goerz told the drinks business the ‘”very aggressively” priced wine was possible primarily because of the large volumes Lidl was taking – around 16,000 L in total.  At the time, the then head of BWS, Ben Hulme said that sweet wine has been “a revelation” to Lidl, and it was keen to see how far it can take it.

“With the Canadian icewine we are responding to the success and seeing where the market is going,“ he said.
