Long Island winery owner killed in crash

Marco Borghese, owner of Long Island winery Castello di Borghese, has been killed in a car accident less than two weeks after his wife died of cancer.

It is thought that Borghese lost control of his Jeep Cherokee while driving along Route 25a and collided head-on with a delivery truck.

The accident follows only two weeks after Borghese’s wife Anne-Marie died of cancer following a diagnosis last year.

Borghese was an Italian prince from Tuscany although he rarely used the title after he moved to the US.

He did however rename the estate he and his wife bought on a whim in North Fork back in 1999 Castello di Borghese and used his family coat of arms on the label.

Despite his Tuscan roots, Borghese was not from a winemaking family and admitted having to “learn on the job”.

The Long Island Wine Council said in a statement: “Just four years after moving to the North Fork, Marco was elected president of the Long Island Wine Council. With his European charm and relaxed elegance, he was instrumental in leading the organization through some difficult, transitional times.”
