VIK releases rare vertical of its iconic wines

Chile’s Viña VIK has released a rare vertical of three of its flagship wines as an exclusive box selection for fine wine collectors.

Chilean winery Vina VIK has released a rare vertical of three of its flagship wines as an exclusive box selection for collectors.

The limited-edition extraordinary collector’s release comprises three vintages of the winery’s flagship wine, VIK 2018, VIK 2020 and VIK 2021. Although each vintage was originally released through La Place de Bordeaux, this is the first time they have been sold as single collector’s set, complete with its own bespoke luxury box.

The selection has been designed for wine connoisseurs and collectors who seek rarity, provenance, and investment-worthy wines, and reflects VIK’s climate, terroir-focussed craftsmanship, and innovative spirit.

“This limited-edition collection captures the evolution, precision, and timeless character of Millahue’s unique terroir,” the company said. “More than a wine selection, this is a vertical expression of VIK’s legacy — where art, science, and terroir converge.”

Exceptional

The VIK 2021 is an “exceptional and unique” vintage, the company said, “with dynamic and soft tannins, tension, pronounced acidity and great length”, which earned it 100 points from critic James Suckling. The blend comprises 77% Cabernet Franc and 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, uniting all elements of Vik’s unique extended approach to terroir, which uses locally sourced clay, wood and flowers in the production of the wine. In the 2021 vintage, this saw native yeasts from its ‘fleuroir’ program used in fermentation, 90% of the wine was aged for 26 months in ‘barroir’ barrels (in which the oak chips for toasting the barrels come from Chilean oak trees that grow in the valley) and 10% in clay vessels from its ‘amphoir’ programme (amphoras made from locally sourced clay).  A cooler vintage than the 2020, the grapes were harvested with “outstanding aromatic intensity, making for long, tense wines with perfect nervous balance”.

The 2020 vintage of VIK is described as “expressive, honest, genuine, elegant, pure and dynamic, as well as tense and vibrant”, born from a year which saw medium to high temperatures, which enabled the tannins to ripen quickly and “become crunchy and dynamic”. The blend comprises 76% Cabernet Sauvignon for elegant structure and line, and 24% Cabernet Franc, which contributes “unique acidity… [and] a lovely and unforgettable finish. The wines were aged for 20 months in French oak barrels and six months in ‘barroir’ barrels

The final wine in the trio is the “unique and elegant” VIK 2018, a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cabernet Franc which was aged for 26 months in French oak barrels. Coming from a cool but “exceptional vintage”, the wines reflect the “authentic and refined expression of our Millahue terroir”, the company said; “expressive, honest, frank, elegant, pure and dynamic wine that is also tense and vibrant”. db’s Bordeaux correspondent Colin Hay awarded it 97 points, with James Suckling giving it 98 points.
