Montecucco bottlings rise 11.1% despite production challenges

The Tuscan DOC and DOCG reports strong growth in bottled volumes while preparing for debut appearance at Wine Paris.

Montecucco DOC and DOCG recorded a notable increase in bottled wine volumes in 2025, with bottlings rising by 11.1% despite a challenging production year.

Figures released by the Consorzio Tutela Vini Montecucco show that the appellation bottled 6,114 hectolitres across 2025, equivalent to around 800,000 bottles in the 0.75-litre format, alongside smaller volumes in alternative formats.

Bottlings grow as production falls

The growth in bottled volumes comes despite a 35% drop in overall wine production from the most recent harvest. The consortium said this decline should be viewed in the context of comparison with 2024, which it described as an “exceptionally generous vintage in quantitative terms”.

Montecucco’s performance also contrasts with a slight overall decline in bottlings recorded across Tuscany when considering the regional average for all DO and IG denominations.

December 2025 proved particularly strong for the appellation, with bottlings increasing by 393% compared with the same month in 2024. According to the consortium, the surge reflects producers’ confidence in Montecucco wines, which are characterised by freshness and the distinctive expression of Sangiovese.

The appellation also continues to emphasise sustainability as a central part of its production philosophy. The consortium highlighted environmental protection, landscape preservation and responsible resource management as shared priorities among producers.

“2025 closes with encouraging signals,” said Giovan Battista Basile, President of the Consorzio Tutela Vini Montecucco. “Even after a complex year from a production standpoint, we can rely on a lively and dynamic appellation. We continue to invest in promotion and development, also thanks to OCM support programmes and regionally co-financed projects, which are essential tools to strengthen our presence on international markets such as the USA, UK, Canada and China, as well as in Italy. Producers believe in Montecucco and demonstrate this every day, as does the wine critic, which continues to recognise the value and quality of our DOC and DOCG wines, ready to compete with the most established appellations on the international scene.”

Trade fair focus for 2026

Montecucco will mark its first appearance at Wine Paris in 2026, exhibiting at Hall 5.2 – Stand E234. The consortium will be represented by five wineries — Basile, Poggio Stenti, La Banditaccia, Villa Patrizia and Tenuta Pianirossi — and will present a vertical tasting of older vintages for the press.

The consortium will also host a tasting desk featuring 26 wines from across the appellation, which will double as an information point dedicated to the Monte Amiata wine region.

Later in February, Montecucco will also participate in L’Altra Toscana, taking place on 18 February at Palazzo degli Affari in Florence as part of the Anteprime di Toscana week. The event, now in its fifth edition, will feature eight consortia representing 12 DOP and IGP denominations and is already fully booked.

“L’Altra Toscana is a fundamental appointment for us,” Basile added. “It is a valuable opportunity to tell the story of an authentic territory and present wines that fully express their identity. We bring to tasting different vintages, selected according to the style of each winery and the natural ageing potential of our wines, offering labels at the ideal moment of their evolution.”
