Diageo wins technology award for its spirits platform
Diageo has won this year’s Gartner Power of the Profession Award for Technology Innovation. It won for its Spirits Intelligence Platform, an AI-driven mechanism which derives crucial data from a cask as it ages to help inform yield, allocation and long-term value.

The Gartner Innovation Awards are the world’s leading competition that recognises organisations for achieving outstanding, quantifiable business performance through innovation in supply chain and operations.
The judges described Diageo’s SIP as a “game changer” that is delivering significant measurable business value.
Such is the proven value of SIP that is being rolled out across Diageo’s global spirits portfolio.
Developed initially from Diageo’s position as the biggest distiller of Scotch Whisky, the technology has transformed spirit maturation into a data-driven, scalable and sustainable growth capability at the same time as preserving the traditional craft skills that are the cornerstone of quality spirits.
The power of AI
Powered by AI, the platform integrates cask-level data, predictive modelling and decision intelligence to optimise yield, allocation and long-term value across Diageo’s global matured spirits portfolio.
It was developed initially for Scotch, of which Diageo has more than 10 million oak casks of spirit quietly ageing in 300 locations until ready for blending.

Each cask is given a QR code, to which data is derived and analysed throughout its life from first fill to retirement, with performance criteria such as rate of loss through evaporation being measured at every stage.
That generated is used in predictive modelling and decision intelligence to optimise yield, allocation and long-term value across Diageo’s global matured spirits portfolio.
It can even point to which warehouse is best suited for the optimum maturing of spirit for a single malt whisky.
Improvements across Diageo portfolio
Diageo says: “Through enhanced visibility, improved capital allocation and more precise long-term planning, SIP has delivered measurable performance improvements across Diageo’s maturation network.
“The platform has established a robust digital and data foundation that positions the company to unlock further value in the years ahead, enabling growth, protecting long-term asset value and strengthening financial performance”.
Ewan Andrew, Diageo’s president of global supply and procurement, said: “This is a standout example of Diageo innovation and a central pillar of our digital transformation, ensuring Diageo remains at the forefront of modern Scotch and spirits production.”
