Technical director of Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges to retire after 35 years

The Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges has appointed Laurence Danel as its new estate manager, who will take over from long-standing technical director Jean-Marc Moron in January.

Danel joins the team from Domaine Fery in the Côte de Nuits,  having previously worked in key winemaking roles at Bouchard Père & Fils and Domaine Faiveley after first cutting her teeth in Burgundy with a harvest at Domaine des Perdrix, which led her pursuing an oenology degree, graduating in 2003.

She is also a member of the Union des Œnologues de France.

The change marks a new chapter for the Domaine des Hospices de Nuit Saint Georges, which has been led by Moron for 35 vintages. Danel however, has been tasked with continuing Moron’s legacy in the vineyard and will support the estate’s longstanding mission of funding the Hospices Civils de Beaune’s projects and charitable initiatives through the sale of its wine.

The auction, which was organised by French auction house iDealwine for the first time this year as part of “strategic move to further expand the reach of the auction beyond Burgundy!, raised €856,950 in total (excluding the charity pièce). This was a decline from the previous year’s €2,281,500 (£1.94m) total, but was due to the 2024 seeing the lowest yielding harvest since 1961, with only 36 barrels produced compared to 150 of the 2023 vintage. However, the average price of a barrel of wine continued to rise, up 41.5% to €22,422, close to the all-time record set in 2022 of €22,807.

In recent years, the the lesser known Hospices de Nuit Saint Georges auction – an older foundation than the better known Hospices de Beaune, but one that had remained “a bit hidden”  – has seen a marked increased in both the quality of the wine and its reputation, as evidenced by increasingly “dynamic” bidding in the room, according to Laurent Delaunay of Burgundian producer and negociant house Edouard Delaunay, and a major buyer at the sale.

the sale would help to boost not only the reputation of the sale itself, but also of the 2024 vintage.
