Ramón Bilbao explores ever more of Spain with white wines

Ramón Bilbao has shown its expertise and commitment to innovation and terroir expression in Spanish wine. db assesses its route to excellence with white wines of merit.

Ramón Bilbao is understood to be a leading Spanish red wine producer, but its prowess in producing high-quality white wines should not be overlooked.

Verdejo is key to Spanish white wine production.

Ramón Bilbao Rueda director Sara Bañuelos explains that the company’s “success stems from a deep respect for its origins and heritage, combined with an openness to the modern world and evolving consumer tastes”.

The winery has always sought to create wines that are approachable, expressive and closely connected to those who enjoy them, says Bañuelos.

In 2016, Ramón Bilbao expanded its vision by embarking on a journey to explore white wines in greater depth. This also saw the winery “establish itself in the Rueda region – Spain’s most emblematic area for white varieties”, explains Bañuelos, who points out that it “once again combined terroir, innovation and modernity to craft wines that reflect both tradition and forward thinking”.

Ramón Bilbao has an “ability to listen actively to consumers and to respond with pioneering creativity and authenticity”. How does it achieve this? By staying close to its audience. To emphasise this, Bañuelos highlights how each wine expresses “not only its origin, but also the values of the brand: curiosity, exploration and emotional connection”.

Sense of belonging

Another way to describe this might be to see how “the wines of Ramón Bilbao evoke a sense of belonging – they tell a story that resonates beyond the glass, combining sensory pleasure with cultural depth”, says Bañuelos.

Whites are increasingly on-trend as gastronomic wines.

This thinking underpinned the launch of Ramón Bilbao’s dedicated white wine project in the Rueda region, she adds. “This step represented a bold and exciting new chapter for the winery – one focused on understanding the terroir in depth and expressing its diversity with authenticity.”

Sustainability is also at the heart of this process, she says, and notes that “this means caring for our resources through responsible water management, the use of renewable energy and the conservation of biodiversity”.

Bañuelos explains: “If we take our estate wine Finca Las Amedias as an example, we can clearly see how terroir defines its character. The Verdejo grapes are grown in sandy, nutrient-poor soils, where the variety shows remarkable aromatic intensity and an abundance of stone fruit notes. Meanwhile, the Sauvignon Blanc component comes from clay soils, which contribute freshness, tension and vibrant acidity to the blend.

“In Rioja, particularly in the northernmost vineyards, we work with lesser-known varieties such as Maturana Blanca and Tempranillo Blanco.”

Bañuelos adds that these expressions demonstrate how “each landscape contributes its own voice to the Ramón Bilbao portfolio”.
