Champagne Telmont launches lightest ever magnum bottle

Champagne Telmont has launched what is thought to be the lightest magnum bottle ever produced, weighing just 1,600-grams, which will be “available to any Champagne House looking to shrink its carbon footprint without changing equipment or process”, the maison confirmed.

The new bottle, which remains “fully compliant with all Champagne standards”, is around 130g lighter than conventional magnum bottles, and reduces the environmental impact by nearly 7.5% during manufacturing, while maintaining identical pressure resistance, transport durability, and aesthetic, Telmont said.

The Rémy Cointreau-owned Champagne house said it had initiated a true “light-weighting revolution”, having understood how much reducing the weight of a bottle could reduce its carbon footprint. “A lighter bottle consumes fewer resources during production, requires less fuel for transport, and generates significant energy savings,” a statement from the company added.

It introduced the first lightweight standard 75cl Champagne bottle  – which is 35g lighter than the standard Champagne bottle – earlier this year, following three years of tests. So far, around 635,000 lighter standard 75cl bottles have been produced, however Telmont wanted to go further and look at a lightweight solution for magnums. After months of research and development, the 1600g magnum passed all performance tests, including pressure-resistance and transport trials and as a result, it will be rolled out across all of Telmont’s cuvées.

It is also a non-exclusive development, it stressed, which will be available to other Champagne Houses looking to shrink their carbon footprint, much like the 800-gram and 460-gram bottles that came before it.

Ludovic du Plessis, president of Maison Telmont said the launch of the lightweight standard magnum “proves that it is possible to push environmental commitment further, without compromising on quality or safety.”

“At Telmont, we refuse half measures. With this magnum, we demonstrate that every format can reduce its carbon footprint. With consistency and transparency, we sign, we countersign, and we keep pushing innovation further, format after format, cuvée after cuvée, In the Name of Mother Nature!”

Champagne Telmont, which is based in Épernay, has Hollywood megastar Leonardo DiCaprio as one of its four backers, a vocal proponent for environmental conservation who uses his platform to help “spread a stronger message” for the brand.
