Why Cava is ‘undergoing an exciting renaissance’

Jaume Serra is more than just a winery, giving its name to some of J García Carrión’s best Cavas. Among these, the Jaume Serra Bouquet range is turning heads. db discovers why it is leading Cava’s renaissance.

Jaume Serra is one of the most distinctive Cava producers in Spain. Located in Vilanova i la Geltrú, 1km in a straight line from the Mediterranean coast, the estate’s original building, El Padruell, dates back to 1647 and offers breathtaking views of where the vineyards meet the sea.

History in motion

Since 1997, it has been part of the García Carrión family, whose 130-plus years of winemaking heritage bring tradition together with innovation. Visitors are often struck by this duality: the historic cellars and walled estate on one side, and on the other, cutting-edge robotics and laser-guided technology that elevate production to world-class levels. Few wineries embody this seamless balance of history, beauty and state-of-the-art winemaking quite like Jaume Serra.

Speaking to the drinks business, Luciano García-Carrión Corujo, the group’s wine vice president, explains: “Jaume Serra Bouquet represents the most approachable and seductive side of Cava,” especially since it has been “crafted from local varieties such as Macabeo, Xarel·lo [and] Parellada”, meaning that “these wines are defined by freshness, minerality and precision”.

In the UK, Jaume Serra Bouquet is widely available through Morrisons, where its modern, fruit-forward style and consistent quality have quickly earned consumer loyalty. It offers a perfect balance between elegance and accessibility, appealing to both connoisseurs and new sparkling wine drinkers.

According to Corujo: “Cava is undergoing an exciting renaissance.” This is because the DO has been reenergised by single-vineyard classifications and the rise of organic production, along with premium Gran Reserva styles.

Everyday luxury

Jaume Serra, with exports to 157 countries, has been instrumental in bringing Spanish sparkling wines to a global audience. As Corujo points out: “Today, Jaume Serra and Pata Negra are leaders in key markets like the UK, Belgium and Germany, and are rapidly expanding in the US and Asia. The category is no longer perceived as ‘just festive’ – Cava is being embraced as a versatile, everyday luxury.”

Indeed, there are a few other factors that have assisted in the wine’s rise in popularity, including the fact that Jaume Serra Bouquet is ideal for year-round enjoyment.

Corujo explains: “Its lively freshness makes it a natural aperitif, while its creamy, fruit-driven palate pairs beautifully with seafood, Mediterranean tapas and light Asian dishes.” Talking of the rosé expression, he says: “It complements charcuterie, grilled vegetables or salmon, making it perfect for informal gatherings.”

A sustainable future

In terms of its newest developments, Jaume Serra continues to invest heavily in sustainability. Corujo explains: “Today, 30% of the winery’s energy needs are met by solar panels, with the remainder also coming from renewable sources.”

He further adds that these efforts are part of a wider mission to reduce Jaume Serra’s overall carbon footprint.
