#WeekInPictures: Champagne, caviar, sumo and Oasis

From Frieze to Soho and a Leyton tiki bar, this week in drinks brought art, sport and music together with liquor in hand.

Ruinart at Frieze

At Frieze London, we visited Maison Ruinart, official Champagne partner since 2008, to view Conversations with Nature by Sam Falls, created in Champagne with local flora, sunlight and rain. The work reflects Ruinart’s commitment to biodiversity.

Caviar at Henri

Team db tried The Snack Packs, Umai Caviar’s collaboration with chef Jackson Boxer at Henri, Covent Garden, pairing duck fat fries with 15g of Umai’s Modern Caviar and a crisp Black Cow vodka martini (available daily from noon).

Hibiki at the Royal Albert Hall

House of Suntory hosted a remarkable evening at the Royal Albert Hall, where Hibiki was the official beverage sponsor of The Grand Sumo Tournament, the first elite sumo here since 1991 and only the second held outside Japan. During the interval, brand ambassador Raffaele Di Monaco shared insights into Hibiki’s artistry.

Oasis and Signature Brew

Partner Content

Signature Brew marked 30 years of Morning Glory with Amazon Music and Mitchells & Butlers at The Green Man in Soho. Guests drank three one-off collaboration beers brewed for the occasion: Live Forever Lager, Morning Glory Session IPA and Champagne Supernova IPA.

Fords Gin at Thames Distillery

db headed to the Thames Distillery in Bermondsey to check out the stills used to make Fords Gin. Only open to friends and colleagues in the trade, we managed to get a rare look inside the distillery’s dedicated bar, which is only open to the public for private events. Fords Gin global GM Simon Ford and George Maxwell, strategic advisor for Thames Distillers, were on hand mixing Martinis, Negronis and G&Ts.

Tropical turns at Leyton Calling

East London tiki bar Leyton Calling unveiled its new menu last week. Taking inspiration from the site’s history, the railway arch was originally a banana storeroom, the new concoctions take tropical flavours and apply them to classic cocktails. Highlights include a watermelon daiquiri with a habanero kick, a breakfast martini served with a croissant and a roasted walnut negroni that arrives with a personalised roast of the orderer.

Gusbourne at 67 Pall Mall

At 67 Pall Mall, Gusbourne shared a line-up revealing the promise of modern English winemaking. Guests tasted Agrafe 2020 (£85), Oak Reserve 2019 (£75), Blanc de Noirs Down Field Sussex 2019 (£95) and Fifty One Degrees North 2014 and 2016 (£195), the latter also poured from magnum (£395).
