CaixaBank hands out almost €1billion worth of loans to Spanish growers
Spain’s CaixaBank increased its financing of the nation’s wine sector by 2.9% this year, handing out €841 million to Spanish winegrowing companies. But which surprising region received the biggest handout in 2o25?

Between January and August 2025 Spain’s CaixaBank dished out €841 million in financing to the country’s wine sector, granting 1,200 loans to wine companies worth €841 million. The sum represents a 2.9% increase compared to loans awarded in the same period in 2024.
The lion’s share of loans, which were implemented by CaixaBank’s agricultural business arm AgroBank, went to Catalonian growing businesses, with nearly €264.3 million granted to the region. This is likely due to the severe drought that Catalonia has battled for the last several years.
After Catalonia, the biggest loans were handed to Castilla-La Mancha and Extremadura with a combined €178 million, while Spanish capital Madrid received more than €100 million.
In southern Spain’s Andalusia, AgroBank financed €74.5 million worth of loans.
Massive leap in the Balearics
According to the banking institution, the Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, Formentera and Cabrera) experienced the greatest growth in financing volume this year, up a staggering 93.3% compared to the same period in 2024.

The boost in loan requests follows the Balearics banning alcohol sales from 9.30pm each night in a bid to “correct uncivil attitudes” of tourists. Those who break these rules, set in May last year, run the risk of incurring a fine of up to €3,000 per person.
Investing in ‘digitalisation’ of wine sector
Furthermore, CaixaBank has renewed its agreement between AgroBank and the Spanish Wine Federation (FEV), the country’s leading private winery organisation with more than 950 members. AgroBank director Jaime Campos and FEV general manager José Luis Benítez said that the deal aims to promote the global competitiveness of Spanish wine and generate opportunities “for all companies”, given its contribution to “employment, territorial development, and the fight against depopulation in rural areas”.
As part of the renewed agreement, CaixaBank will participate in the Wine Sector Digital Maturity Survey, promoted by the FEV, and both entities will organise joint workshops focused on the digitalisation of the agri-food sector, with a particular focus on wine.
Sustainability means faster loans
Interestingly, at the end of last year, CaixaBank incorporated the Sustainable Wineries for Climate Protection certification scheme into its ESG risk management processes. This certification allows certified wineries to speed up and facilitate the credit application process to receive loans, meaning that wineries who choose to go down the sustainable certification route may have quicker and easier access to financing to support and grow their businesses.
According to a study by the AgroBank Chair and AFI, Spain is the third largest wine producer in the world (behind Italy and France), with more than 950,000 hectares dedicated to grape cultivation.
