Berry Bros. & Rudd gains B-corp status

The UK’s oldest fine wine and spirits merchant, Berry Bros. & Rudd has become B Corp™ Certified, one of a handful of drinks companies that has been recognised by the global movement that champions high   social and environmental performance standards.

The retailer, which can date its history back 327 years, has been working toward the milestone accreditation for several years, embedding more sustainable practices across the business, including reducing waste, tackling emissions, investing in regenerative viticulture projects, and working with producers and partners who share its values.

For example, it previously announced a 15% reduction in emissions across the business, with 100% renewable energy, a 160% increase in solar generation in the past two years, 40% of delivery vehicles now running on electricity, with another 30% running on HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil).

Although BBR now joins the global community of businesses committed to meeting high standards of social and environmental impact, chair Lizzy Rudd said it was “just one stage” in its ongoing mission to build a business “that is fit for future generations”.

“Achieving B Corp certification is an important acknowledgement of what we’ve achieved so far, but we view it as just one stage in our continuing journey. We will keep improving by focusing on measurable action and responsible stewardship — building a business that is fit for future generations.”

B Corp Certification is awarded by B Lab, the non-profit network that verifies a company’s total social and environmental impact — through assessments that tally each applicant businesses’ efforts in areas of governance, people, community, customers, and environment. A final ’impact score’ of 80 points or above is required to achieve the certification.
