What to expect from the db conference next month

At a time when the wine trade is facing the dual challenges of rising costs and declining consumption, for its annual conference, db has pulled together a stellar line-up of business leaders to tackle the key issue for our industry right now: profitability.

Seemingly overlooked in many discussions, profitability is the key element of sustainability, because, without protecting margins to ensure healthy returns, an operation can’t generate the funds needed to invest for a greener, more ethical, and quality-focused future.

That’s why this year’s db conference, which takes place in London’s Science Galley on Wednesday 8 October, is centred on ways to manage businesses in a downturn, building on last year’s event, which was focused on emerging Gen-AI tools to help all elements of the wine supply chain to reach consumers at scale, but without high costs.

Titled Profitability in a challenging market, next month’s event promises to look at issues from the hard economic realities facing the wine trade in 2025 to the top techniques for tackling declining consumption, as well as the opportunities for sustainable growth right now and in the near future.

Not only does the conference aim to explore such topics, but also consider a range of successful business models.

To help us do this, we have an eclectic set of talented panellists and speakers, from Nick Martin, managing director of conference sponsor, Wine Owners – a provider of specialist software for the wine trade – to Simon Farr, the industry veteran with 50 years of wine trade experience to draw on, not least the launch and development of Majestic and Bibendum.

Others include Gen-AI expert Pam Dillon, pioneering WineFi founder Callum Woodcock, social media star and Wine Drops founder Jonny Inglis, along with a series of business leaders from different sectors, such as Katy Keating at Flint Wines, Karen Coates from The Wine Society, and the WSET’s Michelle Brampton – click here to see the full line-up of speakers.

As for the programme, that too can be seen in full at the db conference website, and it promises to cover margin considerations by business model; how to leverage digital channels to refresh your operations; what shapes a successful eCommerce strategy; the value of business ecosystems, and a close look at the latest innovations in wine tech, along with a series of networking events, starting with breakfast, then lunch and finally, to conclude the day-long event, a drinks reception, which will include some very fine wines.
